On December 1st, 2019 The Belt and Road Initiative Overseas Students Activities to Yubei was successfully held. Overseas Students of SWUPL from 13 countries including Thailand, Russia, Albania, Tajikistan and Sri Lanka, led by teachers from School of International Education, visited Yubei District of Chongqing to learn about folk customs and experience traditional culture.

The activity was organized by Chongqing Yubei District Working Committee of China Zhi Gong Party, School of International Education of SWUPL, Western Returned Scholars Association in Yubei and was supported by United Front Work Department of Yubei District Committee, Committee of Culture and Tourism of Yubei District, Center for Cultural Heritage Conservation of Yubei District, Folk Museum of Yubei District and Mu'er town. The aim of the activity was to celebrate the 70th anniversary of the founding of the People's Republic of China, spread Chinese traditional culture as well as expose foreign students to China’s development achievements

In Bayu Folk Culture Village, overseas students watched shows about intangible cultural heritage including Sichuan Opera, Xiaohe Gongs and Drums, Martial Arts of Zhao and Hua Ying High–pitch Tune, a kind of folk song. These performances won the applause of the audience.

Then, students visited the Ancient Bed Museum and the Longxi Memorial Arch for Chastity and Filial Piety to experience Bayu culture closely. Overseas students were totally attracted by the exquisite ancient carved wooden furniture and the intact memorial arch.

In the afternoon, students came to Jingang Village in Mu’er town, which was a typical example in new rural area of Yubei District. The students were impressed by the living environment and government’s achievements.

Students deepened their knowledge of the characteristics and development features of the village after a guided tour to Affairs Office of Jingang Village Committee, Qingli Hall and Volunteer Center.

Shi Yu, Second-Level Inspector of Chongqing Committee of China Zhigong Party, said that the activity was aimed to promote mutual cultural exchanges and make Zhigong Party a bridge of cultural exchanges.

Jiang Xiaojuan, Deputy Director of United Front Work Department of Yubei District Committee, introduced that the activity was not only for foreign students but also all the citizens, since our citizens need to fully understand our own culture before becoming an excellent storyteller.

Xue Shan, Chairman of Chongqing Yubei District Working Committee of China Zhi Gong Party, believed that students from countries involved in "The Belt and Road Initiative" could experience Chinese culture through this activity. Xue hoped that School of International Education of SWUPL and Zhigong Party could hold more similar activities together in the future, letting every foreigner coming to China know more about China and Chongqing.
